How to play Indian Rummy
Thirteen cards. Two sequences. One carefully arranged hand.
This guide covers the supplied 13-card rules. Match defaults, deck exhaustion and timeout policies remain labelled implementation decisions.
01. Draw one, discard one
The supplied default uses two standard packs plus two printed jokers. Each player receives 13 cards. A turned card identifies the wild rank; if it is a printed joker, only printed jokers are wild. A turn draws from the closed deck or open pile and discards one card, returning the hand to 13.
02. Sequences and sets
A pure sequence is at least three consecutive cards of the same suit with no joker substitution. A wild-rank card used naturally in its own place is allowed by the supplied default house option. Printed jokers cannot make a pure sequence.
An impure sequence uses jokers to fill missing ranks. A set contains three or four cards of one rank in different suits. Duplicate copies of the same suit cannot coexist in a set. A four-card set with two jokers still needs two natural cards.
03. Aces can go at either end
A♥ 2♥ 3♥ and Q♣ K♣ A♣ are valid sequences in the supplied default. K♠ A♠ 2♠ is not: a sequence cannot wrap around. A set of 7♥ 7♣ 7♦ is valid; 7♥ 7♥ 7♦ is not.
04. Declare a complete hand
A valid declaration arranges all 13 cards into valid groups, including at least two sequences with at least one pure sequence. The 14th card goes to the finish slot. The server must recheck the whole arrangement; a visual grouping alone does not make it valid.
05. Lower is better
Aces and face cards count 10, number cards their face value, and jokers zero. A round is capped at 80 penalty points. Without a pure sequence, all cards count. With only one sequence, only the pure sequence is excluded. With the required sequences, only ungrouped cards count.
First-turn drop is 20, middle drop 40, and a wrong declaration 80. Points, fixed-deal and pool 101/201 matches are separate formats. The default format and disconnect handling must be shown explicitly on the table.
